As we commemorate the 101st anniversary of the courageous stand taken by Dr. Ossian H. Sweet, his wife Gladys, brothers Henry and Otis, and cousin John Latting. Their move into the charming Arts and Crafts bungalow at Garland and Charlevoix on September 8, 1925, forever changed the fight for civil rights, fair housing, and equal justice in America.

The Foundation uses history as a roadmap to inspire opportunity, strengthen neighborhoods, support academic excellence through scholarships and mentoring, promote financial literacy and mental health and wellness, and encourage informed civic participation.

Born in Bartow, Florida on October 30, 1895 to Henry and Doris Sweet, Ossian traveled North and attended preparatory school and college at Wilberforce University in Xenia, Ohio. After receiving his Bachelors Degree he attended Howard University, and, in 1921, earned his Medical Degree...
